Profiles in Giving: Alumni Al Smith and Jack Roddy
Alumnus Al Smith shepherded a San Jose farmer's coop through its transformation and growth into the Orchard Supply Hardware chain. Smith bequeathed his 3,200-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch in Santa Cruz and the majority of his estate to Cal Poly. "My great wish and my goal is to see this place kept intact and natural, a lab and a classroom for the College of Agriculture for 'learn by doing' forever," he wrote during his life. Today, Swanton Pacific is a living laboratory for the College of Agriculture, College of Science and Mathematics, Photo, above, of the coastline at Swanton Pacific Ranch and College of Liberal Arts.Visit the Swanton Pacific Web site

Alumnus Jack Roddy, a Hall of Fame cowboy, combined his love of rodeo, ranching, and Cal Poly. He set aside a part of his estate to fund the Cal Poly rodeo program: "I've just done estate planning and given money to the rodeo team. We need to let everyone know to give to Cal Poly. Once the pens and arena are paid for, my wife and I want money to go for scholarships, so other kids can have the luck I had. Why give it to the government, instead of earmarking it for things that are dear to me?"
